If the bill is defeated. of course. it means that they will stay here only the Lord knows how long. Involved also are 2.900 hardship cases. Some question has been raised as to just where we are going to place this power. some members of the committee insisting that it be given to the Members of Congress. that these cases be referred to the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization. Twentynine hundred hardship cases have been placed in the laps of this committee. We reported out an omnibus bill carrying 12 socalled hardship cases and I think we got by with 6 or 7. The rest are still awaiting action. These are the tactics that are now being used. and if this is the way we are going to deal with the problem. you can figure out how long it will take the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization to deal with what by now probably amount to 3.000 hardship cases. I dare say that 60 percent of the Members of this House have introduced bills to save from deportation some person in their district. They are hardship cases. We are familiar with the facts in a great many of the cases.
