Session #75 · 1937–39

Speech #750029464

These contracts also required the miners to give up their affiliation with the union. (They were commonly known as "yellowdog contracts.") Armed guards were employed to protect the strikebreakers and the property of the employers. Many of us remember when trainloads of foreign workmen. imported labor. were brought into mining communities to compete with mine workers. But now. with the restrictions imposed through our protective immigration laws. andnow that our foreignborn population has become so homogeneous and so accustomed to American ideals of labor and living. these practices are no longer permitted without incurring the condemnation of an enlightened public. It would be impossible here to relate all of the early history which has led to the present state of affairs in the coal industry. Suffice to say that the problem has been with us a long time and is still with us.
