Session #74 · 1935–37

Speech #740208225

The Senator from North Carolina pointed out a certain number of these cases and. as I remember. he talked probably 5 or 6 hours about three or four of them where. according to the Senator from North Carolina. the persons were not of good moral character. They have been guilty of certain violations of law. I have here the answer of the Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization to the arguments made by the Senator from North Carolina. in which he denies those statements. but I am not going to attempt to put the matter upon that basis. I think we may rest assured that with all the diligence of the opposition to this bill. and the fact that the list of cases has been available in the House for a considerable period of time. with all the ability and diligence of the Senator from North Carolina. he brought to us all the cases which were subject to criticism. Let us assume that out of the 2.862 cases there were 28 cases where mistakes were made.
