Session #74 · 1935–37

Speech #740156421

Hon. Cordell Hull. dismisses the importation of farm commodities with the statement that the percentage of imports is small compared to the total of the products produced in the United States. and leaves the inference that the amount is so small that it makes little difference. Using this same argument. it might be said that despite the fact that we have 10.000.000 unemployed in this country. it would not be objectionable to admit several thousand alien laborers or admit them on a quota basis. No one would seriously consider this. yet it is what we do for agriculture. To protect agriculture we should immediately rescind the Canadian reciprocaltrade agreements and other similar trade agreements.
