Mr. Chairman. at this time I want to make an appeal particularly to the Democrats and ask you to not be misled by some of the appeals to prejudice and catch phrases that have been used in opposition to this humane resolution. which have emanated from the Republican or lefthand side of the aisle. Following the Civil War the Republicans brought in annually hundreds of thousands of immigrants to this country. brought them in cattle boats and herded them about shamelessly in the mining districts and in the industrial areas in order to hammer down the wages and the living standard of the American workmen. To be a little more specific. in the district represented by the gentleman from Pennsylvania at Lewisburg and vicinity. hundreds and thousands of individuals living within his district were imported there under contractlabor provisions which were countenanced and advanced by the unscrupulous employers and the Republican party.
