All of you will remember the weeks during which we adjourned from Thursday until Monday or for other lengthy periods of time. There was no necessity for postponing the consideration of this measure until the closing hours of the session. at a time when it is impossible for the Membership of the House to become thoroughly acquainted with the facts. The gentleman from North Carolina has advanced an idea which it seems to me is absolutely untenable. to the effect that a large number of these persons who are threatened with deportation are not illegally in this country. If this were the case. it certainly should not be necessary to ask the Secretary of Labor not to deport them.
