BYPNs. now the Speaker of the House. made the following state1934: "I did not intend to say anything on this bill. but I was just called to the telephone by the Secretary of Labor. who said she understood it had been stated that these were not administration measures. The President has not said anything to me about them. I am frank to say. but the Secretary of Labor asked me to say that the President had expressed a very great interest and his very great desire to have all three of these immigration bills passed." In reply to this statement of Mr. BYRNS. who was then the majority leader. I made these statements on the floor of the House: " Mr. Speaker. there is not a member of the Committee on Immigration who does not know it to be a fact that Commissioner MacCormack. when he appeared before the committee and when asked if the President had seen these bills and had supported them. said he had not. If the hearings were printed. they would show that the President had not read these bills. and this effort to jam legislation through Congress by saying that the President has read it and is for it. when there is no competent evidence to that effect. I resent. * * * I challenge the majority leader. or anyone else. to prove that the President of the United States had read this bill and Is for It." Whereupon Mr.
