Mr. Speaker. this resolution merely provides for the authorization of $90.000. or so much thereof as may be necessary. for the purpose of paying for an arbitration of certain claims of citizens of the United States against Turkey. These claims arise on behalf of American citizens. some 2.500 of our people being involved. from the seizure of American property. personal injuries. and property losses resulting from the deportation of American citizens and losses resulting from the Smyrna fire of 1922. There was an agreement entered into between this Nation and Turkey in 1922 providing for a committee by which they hoped to settle these claims. Ratification of the treaty between the United States and Turkey was not finally made until 1933.
