Session #73 · 1933–35

Speech #730173836

The gentleman has it absolutely right. I am very much in earnest about this matter. I am not a member of the Immigration Committee. and I do not desire to thrust myself into this matter in an unseemly manner. but I hope we do not make a mistake. Let us vote like we have voted here as Democrats and Republicans for many years on these immigration questions. Let us keep up the bars. Immigration is not a political issue. The Republicans have no right to claim that they are restrictionists to the exclusion of the Democrats. In every vote we have had on this question in 10 years I have been here there have been striking majorities on both sides of the aisle. Do not make a mistake today. Let us vote this down and let us bring up the White Russian bill by itself. Let us give them an opportunity and fix it so they shall not be sent back through deportation or give them citizenship if that is your wish. I would not do it that way. and if you want to do it that way. let ur do it in that manner and do it right.
