I am not trying to build up a case. I am appealing to your sense of Americanism. because this committee at no time has had an opportunity to get the facts and the information as to why we have so much smuggling into the United States. Suppose I tell youand the figures will bear me out from your own administration in 1932that over 8.000 aliens were smuggled into this country by the steamship companies. and only 1 percent of them were caught. and when we got them we deported them without penalizing the companies so that they would be more careful in the examination of their ships. Did you know it has been charged by the newspapers and the press generally of the country that this racket of smuggling aliens has brought a profit to these unscrupulous persons amounting to over $20.000.000? Did you know that .it is alleged there is a list somewhere in Habana.
