Right now if sugar should lose its protected American market it would utterly be a great economic collapse in the island. The needle trades could not survive without free access to the continental consumers. the same is true of our nascent agricultural industries. We have the problem of immigrant capital and absentee ownership. The American dollar has been settling there during the last 33 years. If the protective and rehabilitation laws from the United States are to become more and more intimate and decisively apply to Puerto Rico. absenteeism losses will find a great remedy because we are sure it will cut out its worst evils.
