Session #72 · 1931–33

Speech #720027173

President. the bill under consideration is not new. it has been before the Senate for a number of years and in substantially the same form it was considered in the House of Representatives in 1924. The same objections now urged against the bill were urged when it was being considered in the House. and they have been vigorously asserted in the Senate during the past six or eight years. The bill has been considered by the Senate Committee on Immigration four or five times. and extensive hearings have been conducted. There was no necessity. Mr. President. for further hearings by the Senate Committee on Immigration because all possible objections to its provisions had been presented and its merits and demerits. if any. had been fully considered. Notwithstanding the lack of need for additional information. those in charge of the bill agreed that the Senate committee might receive any statement for or against the bill and report the same to this body. That has been done. and there is before us the testimony given before the committee on the 22d and 23d of this month.
