The only people who may come in here are wives and children of people actually domiciled and legally admitted to the United States. You do notcontend. nor can any man contend. that the children and the wives of these husbands are going to interfere with the jobs of our American people. So that a suspension of immigration is not a suspension with any honest purpose to help the American laborer. but is a plan to insert an entering wedge with the purpose of putting a fence around the country so that two years from now they will come along and ask for a complete closing of the doors and separate families in the United States. If this is a real. honesttogoodness suspension. lot us have it. Why not pass a resolution and provide that immigration shall be suspended and give the power to the President of the United States to lift that suspension when times are right? My good friend the gentleman from Washington . chairman of the Immigration Committee. wanted a suspension for five years. He thereby indicated to the country that we are going to have a depression for five years. Then he came down to two years. and then a gentleman on the other side of the Chamber. who knows very little about the subject. has an idea that two years will be just about enough. but now he wants to cut the quota to 90 per cent.
