I understand the same is true with respect to the meat inspectors in the meatinspection service under the Department of Agriculture. Now. then. in the case of the immigration inspectors they go out to the ships along and with the customs inspectors. and perform the same overtime. They may not get through until 3 oclock the next morning. and then the immigration inspector has to go out again in a few hours. He does not get overtime either from the Government or from the owners. Our committee finally came to the conclusion that if it is paid in the Customs Service It should be applied to this service also. We do not like the system at all. The Government is able to pay its inspectors in all services. But we can not get rid of the privately paid overtime in the great. big Customs Service. so our committee regretfully asks that you let the smaller Immigration Service "hook on" to their system.
