That is something which so many evidently overlook. The HawleySmoot bill is the first tairiff measure in the history of the Republic to do justice to the farmer. and yet some of the farm organizations ask me to vote against it. Under no consideration will I follow a path that will lead to the lowering of the bars which the American producer needs to protect himself against the competition of pauper labor in other lands. When I was sworn in as a Member of this body I pledged myself to uphold the Constitution of the United States. and to me that means to look after the best interests of the American producer. whether he works on the farm. in factory. in store. in shop. or in office. Available statistics give some interesting information on wages and manufacturing costs in this and in other countries.
