I desire to correct a few erroneous impressions. The Senator from Pennsylvania drove hard for the nationalorigins provision. He was supported by many patriotic organizations. who based their argument mainly on the fact that if the nationalorigins theory was the basis of quota. it would result in a reduced number of immigrants. The hearings before the committee show that one petition after another was filed here favoring the nationalorigins provision because it would reduce immigration. In other words. we are. taking exactly the same position they took at that time. and I have not any doubt that the Senator from Pennsylvania would be with me if he were here. because the bill would reduce immigration by 30.000. There is no question about the fact. I am just assuming that he would be with me.
