Session #71 · 1929–31

Speech #710177962

Mr. President. under the amendment of the Senator from South Dakota we would do away with the nationalorigins provision and put immigrants under the quota of 1 per cent. which would mean 120.000 people coming in during the year. I have proposed to amend that so as to make It onehalf of I per cent. Under my amendment there would be only 40.000 permitted to come in during the year. or 80.000 less than the number proposed by the Senator from South Dakota. With several million unemployed in this country. What excuse have we for allowing the foreigners to come in in such great numbers?
