At the border quardntine stations there were 109.367 travelers inspected. In the same year the service examined 973.974 alien passengers and 984.771 alien seamen. Officers of the service are assigned to 26 different European consular stations to examine prospective immigrants. In 1929 they examined 173.740 applicants for Immigration visas In countries of origin. The United States Public Health Service is charged with the duty of cooperating with and aiding the States in preventing the introduction of contagious and Infectious diseases into the United States or from one State or Territory to another. and to aid the States in rural sanitation and in the organization of county health units.
