We were taught by McKinley. Roosevelt. and Taft that the proper rate of protection was the difference in cost of production here and abroad. but evidently the request for a tariff on lumber is not supported by any such argument. It is not to protect the American workinginan against Asiatic labor. it is not to protect him against cheap European labor. Our competition comes from Canada. where working conditions and labor are as good as in the United States of America. if they were not. the Canadian workingman would be here in 48 hours. because there Is nothing to stop him. In fact. those workingmen engaged in the lumber industry often work seasonally on different sides of the international boundary line. they encounter the same conditions and they are well informed as to the situation.
