Mount Vernon was a part of that tract known in Virginian history as the Northern Neck and was part of a grant from Charles II to Lord Culpeper. Mount Vernon first came into the Washington family by grant from Lord Culpeper to the immigrant. John Washington. in 1674. Thus the Washingtons derived title direct from the grantee of the Crown.
