But we have reached the point where practically all of us realize the necessity for some protection. If we did not have any protection at all. we would not have onehalf of the people -prosperous. as my friend from South Carolina suggests. and the other half impoverished. but we would all be impoverished. I am in favor of a very strict restriction on immigration. I realize that if the country did not restrict immigration we would be overrun with a class of foreigners who would in a little while utterly destroy our civilization. We would be overrun with an army of wage earners who would put the American wage earners out of business. Our standards of living would be lowered.
