I should like to call the attention of the members of the Judiciary Committee and others to the fact that at McNeil Island there are usually 150 or more Chinese prisoners at a tine who have been convicted of violating the narcotics act. They are sentenced for 2. 4. 6. 8. and 10 years. They have to be deported when their time is up. The United States feeds them foryears. turns them out old and decrepit. and then under the law they have to be sent back to China. That is a waste of money. Now. we should not propose an act which would permit aliens to commit crimes for the purpose of being deported to their own countries. although sometimes they want to do that. but we could pass a blanket act to cancel the sentences of many of these kinds of eases. provided immediate deportation can be effected.
