Session #71 · 1929–31

Speech #710095005

Speaker. I do not want to say anything that might be taken as offensive by any nation in the world or by the people of any nation. or the descendants here of those people. There is discussion going on editorially in some of the papers as to whether the pressure which brings the call for more and more restriction of immigration is on racial grounds or on economic grounds. As far as I have been concerned. neither race nor religion has ever been in my mind in the matter. A black bushman. born in the very center of Africa. is a man as much as I am. but he is a thousand years behind in his opportunity for education and opportunity.
