The Indian furnaces are paying 14 cents a day for their labor. That labor is not as efficient as is our American labor. It Is estimated by those in the business that probably one healthy American does as much work in his day as two and a half or three of the underpaid. starved Indian coolie laborers whom they use there at Tatta. but if we take three of them it comes to only 42 cents a day for the labor equivalent of a man to whom we are trying to pay $4.50. I have had this brought home to me over and over again. not in my own part of Pennsylvania around Pittsburgh. because there it does not make any difference. the freight cost on the Imported iron over the mountains is so great that we have a geographical protection. But down in eastern Pennsylvania.
