Session #71 · 1929–31

Speech #710051944

I had the time this afternoon to point out to some of my good Republican friends on the other side some of the things that one of the farmers out there in Nebraska said to Mr. McKelvie. He said. among other things: We farmers know that we have many handicaps. economic as well as political. but all are minor. and all together do not equal in their blighting and disastrous effects upon us the one great injustice and curse of national protective tariff and restrictive immigration laws for the benefit of industry alone. We know. and Mr. McKelvie knows. that in the matter of distance alone it costs the Nebraska farmer nearly 50 cents a bushel to lay his wheat down in the consuming markets of Europe before he can commence to compete with the European peasant farmer.
