As an illustration of the study of names. let me say that Doctor Hill gave the case of a man named Cole whom. he said. he and most of us would immediately assume to be of British origin. He said they did not stop with that. that they went on to study the names of emigrants who departed from foreign countries. and they found a considerable strain of a family named Kool as coming from the Netherlands to New York. By studying that circumstance and the Englishmen of that name they satisfied themselves very accurately as to the percentage of people of that name who ought to be ascribed to the Netherlands. I do not think it is fair to say that they stopped with a superficial showing of names on the 1790 census.
