Session #70 · 1927–29

Speech #700159890

But I submit to the gentleman one consideration: If the gentlemans logic is to prevail. the delightful concerts that are given here by symphony orchestras and the charming chamber music in the Coolidge auditorium of the Library of Congress ought to be stopped unless hereafter musicians and conductors are either native born or naturalized Americans. We ought not to be allowed to invite over here men and women who have shown their eminence in the great concert halls of Europe. Our programs ought to omit the names of Wagner and Haydn and Handel and Bach and Beethoven in order that we may encourage American composers.
