Frtmonts explorations of the Colorado and the West covered the period 1842 to 1846. 1847 to 1852. In 1847 the Mormons crossed the Colorado River Basin and settled In Salt Lake Valley. In 1849 the discovery of gold in California led many emigrants to cross the Colorado River Basin. In 1851 Fort Yuma was established. According to Lieutenant Hobbs. the first steamboat came up the Colorado to Yuma in 1850. frightening the Yumas so that they ran for their lives. exclaiming that the devil was coming. blowing fire and smoke out of his eyes and nose and kicking back with his feet in the water.
