Session #70 · 1927–29

Speech #700124857

Yes. if the Senator will wait long enough for me to answer the Senator from Georgia first. Then I will yield. In the matter of Mexican immigration we have a problem that is most serious. It is not involved in the question now before us at all. The great difficulty with the Mexican immigration is the difficulty of guarding the long frontier between the United States and Mexico. The Mexican frontier is a longer line than a line drawn from here to Omaha. and the number of border patrol guards is only a few hundred. With a few hundred men to guard a line from here to Omaha. we know that we could not prevent people from crossing it almost at will. If we could guard that Mexican border adequately. we would not need to change the law at all. because the presentday requirements. under the act of 1917. as to literacy and physical health. are sufficient to keep out 90 per cent of the Mexicans who are now coming in.
