Session #70 · 1927–29

Speech #700066582

Mr. Speaker and gentleman of the House. tlis Senate resolution might be entitled a sugarcoated pill for the consumption of the electorate at the next presidential election. Congress undoubtedly will not meet. after we adjourn here in June. until after the next presidential election. and the party in power is between a Scylla and Charybdis of either repealing this provision in the immigration act of 1924 or of putting it into effect. and the party in power has not got the stomach to do either one of those two things. On the last page of the report from the committee accompanying this bill certain figures are given from which any gentlemann claiming even a slight amount of astuteness can gather the reason which prompts this gesture to tile American public at this time. Mnny of the peoples affected by this legislationat least so far as their descendants. relatives. and friends on the other side of the water are concernedhave some votes to cast in the next national election.
