Session #70 · 1927–29

Speech #700034164

In order to accentuate the gentlellans position. I want to make a statement concerning one of the most heartbreaking cases that ever came to my notice. a case where I could obtain no relief. although I applied to the Commissioner of Immigration and to the Committee on Immigration. It was the case of a young woman who came to this country and landed at New Orleans. She was detained as an illegal immigrant. but was later released on habeas corpus proceedings. and apparently the case was forgotten. She married and a child was born to her. and then the immnigration division took cognizance of the fact that the woman was not a nativeborn American and she was deported. Thousands of women down there could not understand the harshness of a provision by which that was done.
