Session #70 · 1927–29

Speech #700009638

The inspectors are underpaid as compared with other inspector services. and they get no overtime. wiich other inspectors receive. Clerks are underpaid and not enough of them. The business of the Immigration Service has gone up by leaps and bounds. yet the number of clerks employed has not gone up. Every Member of Congress has much work with that service. which calls for the writing of many letters and much detail. The work is so heavy that the department itself is hard pressed to keep up with the most necessary work. yet it comes within $1.000.000 or $1.500.000 of paying its own expenses.
