Now. gentlemen. I have about. completed. Please understand that one place where the short-. age of money occurs is in the matter of transportation of the: persons to be deported. You will find in the statement made. before the Appropriation Committee a statement to the effect that the fund in the previous fiscal year had run out so rapidly that now the department. in apportioning money. allots so much. for the persons to be deported from this district and so much from that district. so much for each and every month of the year. regardless of what the situation may be. Just like saying to a grand jury. " You shall sit $50 worth and no more." You will find in the Appropriations Committee hearings a report to the effect that some sort of a circus arrived at Atlanta. Ga.. bringing with it quite a large number of aliens of all kinds. including snake charmers. circus riders. acrobats. and. in addition. some alien shell and card men. procurers. pimps.. prostitutes. and others of a deportable kind. In this case the Immigration Service took notice. It was an emergency. and they found and arrested 20 or 25 of these disreputable aliens and had them up for deportation. To get them out of Atlanta. Ga.. the service used the Atlanta districts whole transportation fund for the remainder of the year. and I can imagine that the departnent is now in a great quandary as to whether it should draw from the deportation money allocated to the Chicago district. where there are a number of alien gunmen traveling around with sawedoff shotguns and machine guns. or draw money from the Pittsburgh district where. I am told. there has recently broken out a very goodsized vendetta between the fascisti and antifascisti. which has resulted in the killing of 24 antifascisti. No. that is not humorous at all. Why should we have fascists and antis in the United States? Mr. Chairman. we have limited immigration. We have restricted it as far as possible. so that only 2 per cent of the number of foreignborn people on- a given censm date may come from other countries. That results in shutting out many good. fine foreign peasants and other working people from any European country you might namefrom Czechoslovakia.
