Session #69 · 1925–27

Speech #690242019

I believe the country would be better off if they were permitted to come in now and have the protection of their father and the benefit of our education rather than to wait four or five years. I believe such legislation would be in the right direction and would be beneficial. but. unfortunately. we are placed in a position where nothing can be done. and for that reason I will support this bill. because I am deprived of the chance and opportunity to vote for a relief measure that all the civic organizations. including the great organization of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America. the Federation of Labor. the American Legion. an . the strong plea on the part of Mr. Curran. who is an outstanding restrictionist and who was the former immigration commissioner. that the discriminatory 1924 immigration act be amended so as to enable the wives and children of declarants who came to the United States before the 1924 act went into effect expected that legislation to that end will be enacted. but instead we are about to enact this bill. Even this little concession on the part of the chairman has been brought in the very last days of the session with a very slim chance of it passing the Senate. What excuse you will be able to give people on your return to your homes for failure to enact this relief legislation.
