Meyer London decided to leave Russia. and at the age of 18 arrived In the United States to live on the lower east side of New York. He endured. in his early years in this land. the privations of the immigrant. He spent the first few years in his fathers print shop. which was not in a very prosperous condition at any time. Fortunately for himself. and for the cause to which he was to devote his life. he succeeded in obtaining a position in the public library. where he could spend his spare time reading.
