Mr. Chairman. I have been a member of the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization of the House now for about 14 years. I have had the honor to serve as chairman of that committee for eight years. I have read many thousands of appeals from naturalized citizens. all immigrants. in behalf of their relatives in various. parts of Europe. I have heard the oral testimony before the committee of hundreds of such witnesses. I have been appealed to personally In my office. at the doors of this Chamber. at the doors of my residence in Washington. D. C.. as well as at my home In the State of Washington. I have read about everything I could find on the subject of immigration. and I think I am able to determine about the date _hen too much immigration for the countrys ultimate good began to flow into the United States. Iu the late eighties andthe early nineties the United States underwent quite a serious period of depression. You will remember the Homestead riots of 1892.
