Session #69 · 1925–27

Speech #690145639

If it had been permitted to follow its own judgment it would not have reported the bill in the present form. But. unfortunately. it appears to me that it can not resist the poisonous propaganda on the part of a resourceful lobby representing a few intolerant organizations that preach and advocate hatred and Intolerance. which advocacy is not only detrimental to the best interest of our country but which has no place in this great Nation of ours. Section 19 of the 1917 act and section 14 of the 1924 act. in absolute and unmistakable terms. provides for the deportation of any criminal or undesirable. The proponents of this bill will be obliged to concede that if any undesirables did enter or were not deported it was not because of lack of law. but due to inadequate appropriations. This. however. has been remedied by the increase of appropriations whereby over $1.000.000 has been specificially appropriated for deportation and a border patrol. Mr. Speaker.
