Session #69 · 1925–27

Speech #690137539

Immigration without regulation may easily produce national conditions worse than an armed Invasion. I recognize. as a native American. as a descendent maternally of Revolutionary ancestors. how essential it is to preserve the traditions of the American people and to maintain the heritage which has been handed down to us. I recognize that selfdefense is as indispensable to a nation as to an individual and that it is essential that we should prdtect ourselves against an unreasonable influx of immigration. Nevertheless. in the enactment of immigration laws we have become panicky. and we have fallen into many indiscretions. For instance. we prohibit the wives. husbands. and children of aliens to enter the United States except within the quota. Now. what is the effect of this?
