Louis PostDispatch. valuable newspaper properties. were acquired. promoted. and conducted for many years by the great journalist. Joseph Pulitzer. He was foreignborn. came here a poor immigrant. but became a publicspirited. prominent. and naturalized American. lie had a high concepfion of the work a newspaper should perform and requested his boys to continue to publish the newspaper properties which he left them and to follow the course that he pursued in the conduct of these journals. I quote below one of his instructions or ideas as to how a paper should be conducted: I know that my retirement will make no difference In Its cardinal principles [the lPostDispatch] . that it will always fight for progress and reform. never tolerate injustice or corruption. always fight demagogues of all parties. never belong to any party. always oppose privileged classes and public plunderers. never lack sympathy with the poor. always remain devoted to the public welfare. never be satisfied with meorely printing news. always be drastically Independent. never be afraid to attack wrong. whether by predatory plutocracy of predatory poverty. This sublime sentence approaches the level and dignity of one of the Teii Conmmndments.
