In a moment. The intention was to keep up a decent standard of wages. to permit the wage earners in this country to live up to the American standard of living. Now. gentlemen. if you close the doors to immigration from Europe. as you have done in your last immigration law. and open the door at our border so that greedy exploiters of labor can go down to Mexico and bring up thousands of aliens in violation of the alien contract labor law and permit them to work at a low rate of wages and thus destroy the standard of living that we are trying .to establish and maintain. you defeat the very purpose of the immigration law.
