Their homes were destroyed. I saw them living in dugouts. and in coveredin portions of the trenches. Here are these people in the various ports of Europe. with passports visaed by our consuls. and it seems to me we are under a peculiar moral obligation to see that they are permitted to enter our country under the restrictions and conditions which very properly prevail with reference to the admission of immigrants. I think we may well make an exception to the restrictions fixed by the present immigration law. and permit the admission of these persons. So the appeal I make is that Senators will read this joint resolution and give it serious thought. I hope they may be moved by the spirit of the season to grant permission to these unfortunates to pursue their way to the United States.
