Session #68 · 1923–25

Speech #680129524

I do not want to yield at the present time. The immigration policy certainly protects labor. and we want it to do that because we are the friends of labor: We want our men to maintain the highest standard of labor that it is possible to maintain in this country. and that is the purpose of the immigration bill. Under these conditions labor. if it shall vote against this measure. says. "We want you to help us maintain our standard as it should be maintained. but we want you to go out and produce food for us to consume. and produce it in competition with world prices. while we receive wages fixed by conditions as we find them here." I believe. for that reason alone. labor ought to be interested in this measure. What about the industrial situation?
