Session #68 · 1923–25

Speech #680124839

But I am saying to you gentlemen that which you already know. namely. that unusual conditions demand heroic remedies. I do not admit. in making that statement. that this is a pricefixing bill. A price that fluctuates with all other commodities and that only protects the farmer in the same ratio that the manufacturer and laborer are protected by the tariff and restricted immigration can hardly be called "fixed." But if it be price fixing pure and simple. I undertake to say that as emergency legislation needed to save Americas basic industry we had better indulge in price fixing rather than see it destroyed. I do not agree with the gentlemen who say it will cause overproduction.
