Session #68 · 1923–25

Speech #680086294

I think. possibly afford to allow the bill to become a law without any provision relating to the exclusion of alien seamen or at least compelling them to pass the necessary examination that all aliens have to pass to come here. I do not think it would be possible for us to decide upon it here at this late hour. when the bill is so nearly finished. As I have said. I can not undertake to deal with the details of the particular- pending amendment. but I should like to have some assurance from the committee that when the bill goes into conference they will at least make some provision which -will prevent the gross evasion of our immigration laws which now is taking place through the alienseamen channel to which I have referred.
