Session #68 · 1923–25

Speech #680085997

However. I am going to vote against the amendment. So far as the immigration bill is concerned. I can not see how I call vote for the 190( quota basis. I remember well the tinle whmeni I was a1n ilnnligralit ilnv"elf amal Clle to this countr? I believe I am ti1e only 4.ne in this body tthat ever had the opportunity to come to this country as an Immigrant except the Senator from Idaho . who was aln 8yearold boy when he came. and the Senator from Michigan . who came across the line from Canada. I know the problems of the immigrant. I know the time will come when we will have to stop immigration entirely from coming to this country. I voted to exclude the yellow races. and I think I was justified In doing so. I agree absolutely with the Senator from Alabama . and also with the Senator from Missouri . in the speeches they made here yesterday. such as I never would be able to deliver.
