Sweden leads the list in literacy. closely followed by Gernmany. and in several European countries we find that there is i lower degree of Ignorance than there is in the United States among our own nativeborn population. Moreover. when we examine the figuresand I putthem all in the REcon. when this debate was on beforewe find the startling fact that the citizens of foreign countries send a greater percentage of their children to school than do the native born American citizens. The senior Senator from Georgia has offered an amendment to exclude all immigrants for five years. I do not want to speak disrespectfully of Georgia. and I do not. it is a great State. with a great history. but in point of literacy. the white population of Georgia is far below the white population of Norway. or of Sweden. or of Denmark. or of Germany. or of Holland. or of Switzerland.
