I wish to inform the gentleman that many years agoe long before 1890. and several- times since. I visited some of the cities of his State. and I was amazed at the conditions under which the people. not only in his but also in the adjoining States. lived. And there. was none of the newer immigrants in those cities that I visited either. But I shall not attempt to make capital out of the misfortunes. of the poor people of his or any other State. However. I sineerely hope that since that time the deplorable conditions in the- gentlemans State have Improved- as much as they have In States and sections of our country to which immigrants are welcomed and live. I also hope that the unfortunate conditions which the gentleman! witnessed. abroad are improving and that there is less suffering. less misery. less want. and less hardship. With regard to the conditions which the gentleman described. let me say to him. though I have never been: in Poland nor in the other countries he has mentioned.
