Hennlngs. Stoddards. and Speranzas. I can not forget that I myself am an American citizen because of the Nations immigration liberality. for my grandfather came to our shores an immigrant. I believe that the presentday immigrant comes for the same reason. and comes prepared to love as he did this land of opportunity and freedom. I know that every unkind statement. every immoderate prediction made today was made of him. and I believe that there is no more ground for these predictions now than when he came. 90 years ago. My heart goes out to the immigrant of today. I rise to speak upon the bill. however. not so much because of my Interest in the immigrant as because of my love for American institutions and ideals. I can not help but feel that Americanism is on trial. that the agelong traditions of our country are being tested. When the present law passed it was regarded -as most drastic.
