Session #68 · 1923–25

Speech #680076429

Some of the settlements established by these early arrivals have flourished. others have ceased to exist. The third stage was the period of the true pioneer. or those who came here in the eighteenth century. the true settlers. Large numbers of English. Scotch. and Irish. more Dutch came to the East. and more Spaniards to what is now Texas and California. This period also saw the beginning of the German immigration. Some of those who came were sent here as a reward. others who came were criminals sent here as punishment and for exile. This last is particularly true of some of the early English arrivals at the Carolinas.
