Mr. Chairman and gentlemen of the committee. it is somewhat disappointing to find that the motives of the majority of the Committee on Immigration favorIng this bill are attacked from so many sources. The Members of the House who are not on the committee might reach the conclusion from what has been said that the actual merits of the immigration question were never considered. taking the remarks of my good friend from Chicago as the basis. One might suppose the whole measure was based on fear from California and Ignorance from the South and bitter prejudice growing out in the State of Washington.
